Sun And Bloom Permaculture Series: Part 3 In the Sun And Bloom Permaculture Series we weave science-based processes, patterns observed in nature and life sustaining ancestral wisdom from cultures across the world — exploring how these timeless principles can guide the way we live, grow, and design spaces that honor Earth, People and our shared Future.
When people first come to us for help designing their land, they often start with the same question: “What should I plant here?” Our answer is usually the same: "Let’s talk about your mission first." In permaculture and regenerative design we don’t begin with plants or structures. We begin with purpose. Before we can design a resilient landscape, we need to design a resilient direction — a sense of what keeps our choices coherent through seasons of change. That’s why the first step in our design process is always to define three things: Mission, Vision, and Goals. Your Mission is your compass — the deeper “why” that gives your project meaning. It might be: “To create a homestead that feeds my family and heals the soil,” or “To educate and inspire others to live regeneratively.” It doesn’t have to be perfect — but it must be true. Your Vision is the destination — the clear mental image of success. What does your land feel like when it’s working as you imagine? How does it serve your family, community, or ecosystem? Clarity in vision gives you something magnetic to move toward. Your Goals are the roadmap — the measurable, actionable steps that bring the vision to life. They should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Goals are how big dreams become tangible progress. When these three are aligned, design and planning becomes joyful. Instead of reacting to problems, you’re moving with intention. Your Mission guides your energy, your Vision directs your creativity, and your Goals give your work traction. This is why, in our yearlong permaculture design journey, we spend the first part of the course doing inner design before outer design. We do the same with our design clients. We refine our Mission, Vision, and Goals — because when we know where we’re going, the land begins to show us how to get there. Your turn to try it: If you’re at the start of your garden, homestead, farm or community design and plan journey, take one quiet evening and write these three things down. It may be the most important exercise you ever do. And if you’d like to walk through this process with guidance, you can explore what we’re offering every year — it’s designed to help you turn your vision into a living landscape.
