How We Define Permaculture In This Program:

For us, Permaculture is more than gardening or farming — it is a holistic systems-design approach for creating and managing regenerative human habitats, communities, and institutions. At its heart, permaculture is about designing spaces and relationships that meet evolving human needs while regenerating the ecosystems that support all life. We see permaculture as:

  • A science of design — rooted in ecology, patterns, and systems thinking.
  • A practice of regeneration — building soils, harvesting water, growing food, integrating animals, using regenerative materials and restoring biodiversity.
  • A way of living and leading — shaping communities, economies, and cultures that are resilient, ethical, and life-giving.

In this course, permaculture is taught not as a static set of techniques but as a dynamic design process—a flexible toolkit you can apply to:

  • A homestead or farmstead, ensuring resilience and abundance.
  • A consulting practice or professional path, serving clients with integrity and creativity.
  • A mission or ministry, bringing regeneration and hope to communities around the world.

You will learn how to:

  • Observe and analyze natural and human systems.
  • Design food, water, soil, shelter and energy systems that mirror the resilience of ecosystems.
  • Build social and entrepreneurial structures that support thriving communities.
  • Integrate ecological, cultural, and spiritual dimensions into a living design.

By the end, permaculture will not just be something you “know about.” It will be something you live, embody, and apply to your land, your livelihood, and your community.

Frequently Asked Questions!

What kind of project do I need to have?

To ensure a supportive and dedicated learning community, we are opening this course to 21 participants or less who have a doable real-life project to design and are able to commit to completing the design by the end of the course! The project must have the capacity to be implemented, meaning that the "clients" who this design is being created for have the capital necessary and willingness to start implementing it (capital can take the form of a combination of the 8 forms of capital we will discuss in the course). You can be the designer and the client.

What if I can’t travel?

In the 12+ years of teaching in all types of environments and with people from all walks of life, we found that face-to-face interactions and hands-on immersive learning are indispensable to practical education. The 5 day immersion on our farm will include interactions with farm permaculture systems, such as compost, grey-water, orchards, market garden, animals, cob structures, and more, as well as collaborative design and community building. If you think you cannot make it to the 5 day immersion, please do not apply for this course.

How do refunds work?

Full refund within 14 days after your first payment, but not after the course has started. Deferrals allowed once without penalty.

What kind of meals do you serve during the in-person opportunities and immersion?

During our in-person learning gatherings, we serve wholistic omnivore meals that include fresh and preserved vegetables, fruits, and meats, as well as cheeses and breads. We do not serve industrially processed foods (and that goes for seed oils also)! Unfortunately we cannot accommodate special diets, however, each dish will have all the ingredients posted so that you can make your choices. For quantity purposes, please mark your dietary needs in the application.
